ABOUT
While dao may often be considered cruel, one might instead say that the one who is his mother was clever. She had children before and would have children again and these children of hers were Useful. (And, once possible, largely left to their own devices until their particular Usefulness kicked in.) They were, quite often, wished for. And if one were to have them on hand anyway? Well, all the more simple to procure one in a pinch.
Now, some people wish for children out of wild desperation. Some in the lacking of hope or other options. Still others with starry eyes and dreams for a family. Forsyntia Boerenbont was getting on in years and had wished for 'some help around The House[2], and none of your tricky nonsense with it' - and, in return, the one who is his mother had offered forth her 'best beloved.' He had, in the time after, tried to explain that this was not his name and, further, that it was very much sarcasm. But he couldn't offer an alternative for the former and wasn't yet skilled enough with Common to accurately articulate the latter. So the name stayed. And he stayed right along with it.
He is even quite well-loved there. He assigns rooms and pours drinks. (Though Syntia will call him Tricky Nonsense when he's too heavy-handed with said pours.) He deals cards and makes sure that no one's giving anyone any more trouble than Syntia's content with.
The invitation to Strixhaven came as something of a shock. (So did being addressed on a piece of paper as a Boerenbont[3].) His initial reluctance to respond was waved off with a firm declaration that she was perfectly fine on her own (had been for quite some time before she'd received him) and had no plans whatsoever of dying while he was away. And that he had better return to her more useful than when he left, yes?

personality
+
good listener (is this sometimes because he doesn't know what to say? maybe) . loyal . helpful . patient . slow to anger
=
quiet . not overly emotive . awkward . (selectively) obedient . romantic (look, people tell you things when you're pouring them alcohol. and some of those things are nice.)
–
unpolished . stubborn (often refuses assistance) . avoidant . feeling useful = proving worth . uncommunicative . inarticulate
appearance
Best is Big[4]. (And very possibly still growing.) He isn't bothered by it, but he is very careful with it. His social discomfort comes from a decade without consistent practice, not his size. He's not great at eye-contact.
He isn't very ostentatious as far as Earth Genasi go. No gems or sharp edges or fissures brimming with golden light. His skin is a muted, vaguely metallic gray - smoothed out, but not particularly polished.
He has a quiet voice for someone so large. Deep and soft and slightly rumbly. His Common is still a bit stilted and a tad too formal.

abilities
extra notes
[1] Very much in the sense of furniture-making. Largely metalwork. He's very accustomed to needing to make things that fit him. Or Syntia. He'd just like to make them better. And maybe a bit ... prettier?
[2] The House being a fairly successful inn and tavern run by Forsyntia Boerenbont. And also, on certain nights and with certain knowledge, The House being Forsyntia Boerenbont. Who is, in turn, running a fairly successful backroom gambling ring[a].
[a] Fairly successful in a small town, small money sort of way. Forsyntia's not a don, just a hustler. And everyone enjoys betting on which of the latest group of rookie adventurers is going to swing back around looking the most maimed. That's just a fun bonding experience for people. As friends and neighbors.
[3] So maybe he has a weird relationship with family vs. ownership. Who doesn't?
[4] Reasonable assumption is that his father was a Goliath. Syntia insists that this explains both his coloring (unnecessary) and his size (far more reasonable).
